from the New York Times.
With the death count rising, at least a few Republicans appear to be worried about what their party and its allies have sown.
In an article this month for Breitbart, the right-wing website formerly run by Steve Bannon, John Nolte argued that the partisan gap in vaccination rates was part of a liberal plot. Liberals like Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Anthony Fauci and Howard Stern have tried so hard to persuade people to get vaccinated, because they know that Republican voters will do the opposite of whatever they say, Nolte wrote.
His argument is certainly bizarre, given that Democratic politicians have been imploring all Americans to get vaccinated and many Republican politicians have not. But Nolte did offer a glimpse at a creeping political fear among some Republicans. “Right now, a countless number of Trump supporters believe they are owning the left by refusing to take a lifesaving vaccine,” Nolte wrote. “In a country where elections are decided on razor-thin margins, does it not benefit one side if their opponents simply drop dead?”
Anti-vaccers no more represent the Republican party than Antifa anarchists represent the Democratic party. I'm Republican and vaccinated, as are all I know with similar values. The traits that come to mind when I describe conservatism are: self reliance, personal responsibility, limited government (such as local school boards making decisions for their community rather than California dictating from Sacramento) and free enterprise.
The media has created myths about conservatives in a purposeful and deceitful manner. Having been with The Times almost 40 years, I can say I was proud only during the first 30. Today, I am sad beyond words.
Really twisted logic by the Breitbart boys.
Russ… I miss these discussions!
Just a couple of thoughts….
“Hysterical how the Republicans twist everything “ statement sounded pretty political to me?
Data has shown that the viral load in the nasal membranes of vaccinated and unvaccinated can be equal - so both can be hosts. So you could be a host as well. Keep triple masking and don’t socialize!
As I stated previously Covid (even at 100% vaccination) is not going away until it’s worked it’s way through the herd. Covid zero as we were promised isn’t happening.
Mutations are what viruses do… we need to be worried about different strains that come from different parts of the world.
Covid is ending up to be a virus that…
Amen.
I care because if folks don't get vaccinated, then there are still hosts (unvaccinated people) and the virus still has the chance to mutate into more variants, some of which could evolve to be resistant to the current vaccines and then I or my loved ones could get Covid and die or have long-haul Covid symptoms. I want life to get back to some semblance of normal without worrying about catching Covid from unvaccinated folks. It's not about freedom. It's not about politics. It's about public health. It's about caring about your neighbors.
